Häggenschwil is a popular excursion destination and is located approximately 11km north of St Gallen; its attraction is the ruin of Ramschwag Castle and the dark stories told about the Ramschwag dynasty. Built just before 1200, and the home castle of Lord von Ramschwag, today there is only a ruin. The circular wall with its gate structure still remains, together with parts of the towers and various rooms. The sinister family reputation did not stop one female family member becoming an abbess and some of the knights being distinguished for their charity.
