The Predigerkirche was originally a monastery and a church founded by the Dominican monks in 1230. It is located adjacent to the Zürich Central Library, which stands on the site of the former monastery closed in 1524 during the Reformation. Additions and alterations took place over the centuries and the present church dates mainly from the period 1606-1614; the main features are the high choir and the massive organ. The very slender steeple dates from 1899/1900, when it was rebuilt by the architect Gustav Gull (1858-1942).
