The Powder Tower marks the south-eastern corner of the former town fortifications and was built during the upheaval surrounding the Reformation, in the period 1522 to 1532. In spite of a number of unfortunate incidents, it continued to be used to store gunpowder until 1863; it has been free-standing since 1885 when the town wall was demolished. It is 8.5 metres in diameter internally and close to 14 metres externally with walls tapering from a minimum of 2.7 metres to 1.8 metres at the top. The tower was completely restored in 1999 and the ground floor is hired out for private events.
