The Polybahn funicular railway is also known as the ‘Student Express’ and runs from central Zürich to the University and the Technical High School. The three minute journey is taken by some 1.5 million passengers annually and the Polybahn has been in operation since 1889. Initially water ballast operated, it was electrified in 1897. The original operating company started to lose money and the railway was saved by the UBS bank in 1976, hence its full name of UBS Polybahn. The original system was modified and refurbished several times until completely replaced and updated in 1996, but still respecting the old style.
