The Polish National Museum has, since around 1870, been housed in the medieval Rapperswil Castle (see separate entry), which was at one stage the home of Count Ladislaus Plater, the exiled Polish leader. It presents Polish cultural and political life in the 19th and 20th centuries. The ‘Liberty of Poland’ column in front of the castle was erected in 1868. The present permanent exhibition dating from 1975 is devoted to Poland’s contribution to western civilisation, commemorates famous emigrants such as Chopin, Copernicus and Marie Curie and shows art exhibits on temporary loan from museums in Warsaw and Cracow.
