Located between the Sihl and Limmat Rivers and home to the Swiss National Museum (Schweizerisches Landesmuseum) (see separate entry), Platzpitz park is nowadays a quiet family friendly place. It was not always like this and was once notorious, being known as ‘Needle Park’ in the 1980s when it was a centre for drug addicts. Today it is often used in the summer months to host events which are becoming increasingly popular. The Knabenschiessen (Boy’s Shooting Match), which still takes place in Zürich today, originated in the meadows of Platzspitz, where in the 16th and 17th centuries fairs, including shooting matches, took place.
