Located on the River Rhine between Schaffhausen and Diessenhofen, the 13th century former Clarisse convent and its grounds are regarded as one of the cultural treasures of the region. It was founded in 1263 and although closed in 1529, in the wake of the Reformation, it re-opened in 1578. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, it finally closed in 1836. Bought by the Georg Fischer group in 1918, the convent has been restored and is now used as a training and conference centre. The iron library in the west wing is open to the public and houses some 40,000 scientific books.
