Beneath the New Palace (Neue Pfalz), as the east wing of the abbey is known, are enormous wine cellars, which were turned into large meeting and assembly rooms in 1998/99. They are also used for banquets and can seat up to 150, or up to 300 for a standing buffet. The project, an architectural highlight, which has a spectacular gate which can be lowered , was designed by the distinguished architect Santiago Calatrava (b.1951) who was also responsible for the nearby Canton Emergency Call Centre (see separate entry). Caltrava’s other projects include the redesign of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (2004).
