Named after the founder and opened in 1951 during his lifetime, the Oskar Reinhart am Stadtgarten Museum houses nearly 600 paintings from the 18th to the 20th century by German, Swiss and Austrian painters. The painting, ‘Kreidefelsen auf Rügen’ (Chalk Cliffs on Rügen) by the German Romantic painter, Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), is one of the important items in the collection, in which Swiss paintings are particularly well represented. The museum is housed in the converted Alte Gymnasium, originally built between 1838 and 1842 by Leonhart Zeugheer and was enlarged in 1995 by conversion of the third floor under architect Johann Frei.
