The Old Arsenal Building is a large and impressive Solothurn building, which has been declared an ancient monument. In the days of the city states, the arsenal and town hall were the symbols of power and built to impress. The present building dates from 1609-1614, but there is reference in 1463 to an ‘armour hut and spear house’ and, in the 16th century, to a gunsmith foundry, a gunpowder mill and an upper and lower arsenal. The building was renovated between 1968 and 1976 and houses a museum (see separate entry).
