The Historisches Museum Obwalden covers the cultural history of the Obwalden Canton and has, since 1928, been housed in the former arsenal of Sarnen. One of its most important sections contains finds from the Roman settlement in Alpach and other prehistoric and early artefacts. The collection is wide ranging and includes weapons and uniforms, 12th to 18th century religious art, altars, statues and other liturgical items, local art from the 17th to 20th centuries, agricultural implements, furniture and coins. Another item of interest is a reconstructed alpine hut. The museum also stages special exhibitions
