The picturesque medieval Oberhofen Castle, about 5.5 km southeast of Thun, is on the shores of the lake and should not be missed. It is a branch of the Berne Historical Museum and has rooms from the 16th to the 19th centuries decorated in Bernese style; these include the Knight’s Hall, the Summer Hall, the Turkish Smoking Room and the neo-Gothic Dining Room. Other highlights are the ‘Lake Turret’ and the medieval chapel with wall paintings of the Virgin Mary, St Christopher and the Last Judgement. The beautiful surrounding gardens have a children’s chalet, complete with toys, and offer magnificent views.
