The 19th century German philosopher and classical philologist Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) first came to Sils in 1881. The town is situated approximately 10 km southwest of St Moritz. He rented a room in the house now known as the Nietzsche Haus and returned there every summer from 1883-1888, where he worked on many of his books. Three rooms of the house are devoted to a permanent exhibition of Nietzsche’s life, which includes photographs, documents, manuscripts, letters, the original death mask, various busts and music-related exhibits. There is a complete collection of his works and temporary exhibitions of modern art are also staged.
