The Niesen funicular takes you from Mülenen, about 16 km south of Thun, on the 30 minute ride to the summit at 2,362 metres. The first hotel on Niesen was built in 1856, but the funicular was only constructed in 1906-1910; when the German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) visited in 1886 the trip took more than five hours. The funicular runs alongside the longest staircase in the world with 11,764 steps; used for maintenance it is not open to the public, but has been covered in just over 52 minutes. The stunning alpine views can be admired from a glass fronted restaurant.
