The building on the east side of the monastery square is known as the New Palace (Neue Pfalz) and was built by Abbot Beda Angehrn between 1767 and 1769, although finishings continued until 1787. It was the official residence of the Prince Abbot and seat of the temporal central administration of the monastery state. Following the dissolution of the monastery in 1805, the new palace became the seat of government for the new Canton of St Gallen. The east section of the old palace wing, now also used as offices, houses the former Prince Abbot’s dining room, (tafelzimmer) containing outstanding stucco work.
