Neumarkt has a long history and the area was, in 1145, described as a ‘new suburb’. As well as the Haus zum Rech at No 4 (see separate entry), it has a number of historic properties. At No 5, which is now the Theater am Neumarkt, the medieval Bilgeriturm tower was incorporated into what was then the Schumacher (Shoemaker) guild house. The Gothic 12th century Grimmenturm, at No 27, was previously a residence and was restored in the 1960s. The name, which means sourpuss, is said to relate to the original owner. Note the classicist fountain at the junction with Rindermarkt.
