The Natural History Museum has a collection totalling over 250,000 items, comprising plants, invertebrates, vertebrates, fossils, and other geological objects. The museum organises temporary exhibitions accompanied by lectures and also monitors and maintains a database on the current state of the fauna in the region. One of the biggest attractions for visitors is the Nile crocodile mounted in 1623 and believed to be the oldest example of taxidermy still in existence. The acquisition of this object led to the purchase of the skeletons of a human and a dog, the backbone of a whale, and the mould of a swordfish.
