The circular Munot Fortress is a Schaffhausen landmark; set on a hill, it dominates the town. Built in the period 1564-89, it was based on a sketch in a 1527 book by Albrecht Durer (1471-1528), with 5 metre (14 feet) thick walls. It has a moat around it and a ramp instead of a staircase in the main tower, to facilitate the servicing of artillery. There are superb views of the town from the battlements. At 9 pm the guard who lives in the fortress rings the bell, which, in former times, signalled the closing of the town gates and inns.
