Known as the ‘Queen of Mountains’, Mount Rigi, at an altitude of 1,800 metres, is part of the Swiss Alps. It provides superb views, which include 13 lakes and extend as far as Germany and France. The English Romantic landscape painter J.M.W.Turner (1775-1851) added to Rigi’s fame through his paintings, including ‘The Blue Rigi, Lake of Lucerne-Sunrise’. The Weggis cable car, opened in 1968, operates every half hour all the year round (except for two short maintenance periods) and goes up to Rigi Kaltbad, a ten minute journey. It connects with the cogwheel railway station (see separate entry).
