The Swiss numismatist and scholar, Friedrich Imhoof-Blumer (1838-1920), is responsible for the prominence of the Winterthur coin collection, which began in the 17th century and is housed in the Villa Bühler. The collection consists of more than 50,000 coins, banknotes and medals, including the most important antique coin collection in Switzerland, which is supplemented by 130,000 plaster casts for study purposes. The museum’s Swiss collection is only surpassed by that of Zürich’s National Museum. Changing exhibitions deal with various facets of the collection and the cultural history of money.
