The Münsterbrücke across the River Limatt, links two of Zürich’s greatest attractions, the Fraumünster and Grossmünster churches (see separate entries). This elegant bridge, which allowed stagecoach traffic over this part of the river for the first time, was designed in 1838 by Alois Negrelli (1799-1858) and replaced the wooden pilgrim’s bridge (built c.1220). Negrelli also created the plans for the Suez Canal, built later by Ferdinand de Lesseps, and he was responsible for the railway from Baden to Zürich. The equestrian statue by Hermann Haller, is of the military leader and burgomaster Hans Waldmann (1435-1489), beheaded at the instigation of his political enemies.
