Located 14 km south of Sarnen, the Melchsee is a lake in the Obwalden canton with a surface area of 0.54 km² at an altitude of 1891 metres. Its resort is the mountain village of Melchsee-Frutt, accessible by car but also by a gondola lift. The summer attractions are fishing, as the lake is full of trout, rock climbing the imposing Boni rock faces and hiking, including the four-lake walk via Tannalp, Engstlenalp, Jochpass and Trübsee to Engelberg. In winter there are two ski regions, Balmeregghorn/Erzegg and Bonistock, and an 8-kilometre toboggan run to Stöckalp. Children will enjoy the Fruttli-Park.
