Enjoying a prominent position in front of the UBS bank headquarters in Bahnofstrasse is a large granite sculpture of arches plinths and columns, a 1983 work of Max Bill (1908-1994). The sculpture initially caused some controversy, as is often the case with modern art. Bill was a Swiss architect, sculptor, painter, industrial designer, graphic designer and writer who was influenced early in his career by Le Corbusier. He, in turn, has had a profound effect on a wide range of Swiss art. He designed a number of exhibition pavilions, including the Swiss pavilion for the 1938 New York World Fair.
