The Marktplatz is the heart of the old sector of Solothurn and, as well as the 12th century clock tower (see separate entry), has the lovely St Ursus fountain. The figure on this fountain is by Hans Gieng (first mentioned 1525-died 1562), whose public fountains in Berne and Fribourg have made him famous. There is a produce market on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9am to noon. Try the local delicacy, the Solothurner Kuchen, at one of the terrace cafés such as Rust. This tart, of nut fondant and whipped cream on a biscuit base, can be bought at most local cafés.
