Marktgasse is located off the Limmatquai and is a favourite night spot in Zürich, with many bars, pubs and restaurants offering good quality dining, at reasonable prices. Marktgasse is where, in 1845, David Sprüngli and his son Rudolf had a small confectionery shop, from which developed Confiserie Sprüngli, now part of the world-renowned Lindt organisation. No 20 Marktgasse is the Zunfthaus zur Schmiden, a guild house for the barbers and blacksmiths, which dates back to 1412; it is now a popular restaurant offering its own house wine. The Rheinfelder Bierhaus is a no-frills beer hall, known for its beef stew.
