Lindenhof is regarded as the birthplace of Zürich and is located on top of the ruins of a Roman customs post, believed to date from 15 BC, and also a Roman fortification from the 4th century AD. Today it is a peaceful tree shaded area, where chess players meet, and it has wonderful views of the city from its elevated position. It was, at one stage, a German imperial stronghold and a fountain commemorates the defence of Zürich by the city’s women in 1291, against Albert I of Germany (1255-1308). A 2nd century marble gravestone is one of Zürich’s rare Roman relics.
