Built towards the end of the 18th century by entrepreneur Johann Sebastian von Clais, the Villa Lindengut is dedicated to the history of Winterthur. Two unique features are the 18th century wedding room, still used for civil weddings, and the fact that, as the owner knew Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), it is reputed to have the first lightning conductor in Switzerland. Winterthur history is covered from Roman times until the 19th century and the museum also focuses on arts and crafts with changing exhibitions. Particular attractions are the toy collection in the former coachman’s cottage (Kutscherhaus) and a model of Winterthur during Roman rule.
