The Limmatquai was built in the 19th century, prior to which the waters of the Limmat River came right up to the houses; it is now a popular shopping street. There are a number of attractive guild houses, whose rich interiors testify to the wealth of the guilds which governed the city until 1789. These include No 54 ‘Haus zur Saffran’, which belonged to the spice and grocery merchants guild and dates from 1719-1723. No 40, the double storied ‘Zunfthaus zur Zimmerleuten’, belonged to the carpenters and masons guild and dates from 1709 (extended in 1783-1785). All the guild houses now incorporate restaurants.
