Located in front of the Zürich Kunsthaus in Heimplatz, is the sculpture ‘Le Chant de Voyelles’ (The Song of the Vowels) by the Cubist sculptor Jacques Lipchitz (1891-1973). The work was cast in Paris in 1932 and there are a number of copies. Lipschitz was born in Lithuania and moved to Paris in 1909, joining a group of artists that included Juan Gris, Pablo Picasso and his friend Amedeo Modigliani. Lipschitz said the work is linked to a legend of ancient Egypt and the Song of the Vowels prayer, which priests and priestesses used to conjure up the forces of nature.
