Considered one of the most beautiful places on the Rhine between Basel and Lake Constance, Laufenburg is listed as a heritage site of national significance. It received the 1985 Wakker Prize, for the development and preservation of its architectural heritage. Located about 21 km east of Rheinfelden, it has a population of around 2,000 and is joined by the Laufenbrücke to Laufenburg (Baden) in Germany. The two towns were one, until divided by Napoleon in 1801. Highlights are the lovely 1489 parish church of St John’s, the Schiff Museum (see separate entry), the Erwin Rehmann Sculpture Museum and the castle ruins.
