One of the last works of the famous French Catalan sculptor and painter Aristide Maillol (1861-1944), ‘La Rivière’ (The River) is a female nude with long flowing hair created between 1940 and 1944. Nearly all Maillol’s mature works were of the naked female form and, to the sculptor, this work symbolises nature and is allegorical. Three of his bronzes grace the grand staircase of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City; Summer, Venus Without Arms, and Kneeling Woman: Monument to Debussy.
