The Kunsthalle Zürich was founded by an art society in 1985, to complement the Kunsthaus Museum. More specifically, its aim is to make contemporary international art more accessible to the public by providing an attractive showcase for lesser known, and often young, artists. In May 1996, the Kunsthalle moved to its present location, which is in the art centre of the former Löwenbräu brewery, in combination with the Migros Museum of Contemporary Art. Five large scale and up to five smaller exhibitions are staged annually, usually one-person and designed in co-operation with the artist. Lectures, artist talks and symposia are also staged.
