Rhineau is located about 9 km south of Schaffhausen and, on an island in the centre of the River Rhine, you will find one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Switzerland. It is the church of a former Benedictine monastery, which was said to have been founded c.778, but was first documented in the 11th century and was suppressed in 1862. Temporarily abandoned in 1529 during the Reformation, the abbey re-opened in 1532 and became a centre of the Counter Reformation. The church was rebuilt in the baroque style in the early 18th century and hosts the world-famous ‘Rheinau Concerts’.
