The Klingnau Reservoir (Klingnauer Stausee) is a nature reserve, which is not only famous for its rich bird life, but is also a favourite recreation area for locals and visitors. It lies at the mouth of the lower Aare valley and was created in 1935 with a surface area of some 1.5 km² (about 370 acres), a maximum length of 3 km and a maximum width of 500 metres. A silting up process has created a habitat where 270 bird species spend their winters and the area is also home to amphibians, reptiles, beavers, wild pigs, bats and rare plants.
