Although there had been an earlier place of worship on this site, the first time a ‘Kirche auf dem Berg’ was officially documented was in 1248. The church, located some 6 km south of Zürich, was originally catholic and belonged to various abbeys. In 1443, the timber church was burnt down and replaced in stone. During the Reformation in the 16th century, it became a puritanical reformed church under the Zwinglis, until the Federal Constitution of 1848 brought greater freedom. The dominant feature of the church is its stone clock tower and its present day appearance stems largely from a 1996 renovation.
