Kaiserstuhl, a small town with a 700 year history, is located on the south bank of the River Rhine, about 12 km southeast of Zurzach. Listed as a Swiss heritage site, it has great charm and is connected by bridge to the German town of Hohentengen opposite. Kaiserstuhl is dominated by the 13th century Obere Turm (Upper Tower), all that remains of the fortifications. Attractive buildings include the 1757 Baroque St Katharina Church, the late-gothic Amtshaus, the Palais Mayenfisch and the former inn ‘Zur Krone’. The Swiss composer and conductor Hermann Suter (1870- 1926) is commemorated by a fountain named after him.
