The Jesuit Church, located in Hauptgasse about 100 metres from the cathedral, is one of Solothurn’s jewels; its façade was donated by Louis XIV, but gives little idea of the splendid interior. Built in Baroque style in the period 1680-1689, the inside has the most beautiful Italian-style stucco work by Ticino artists. The 1704 high altar is another feature, with pillars which frame the painting of the ‘Ascension of the Virgin Mary’, by Franz Carl Stauder. The cloister has interesting Roman inscriptions and the roof gable has finely carved ornamentation with the crest of the founder.
