In the courtyard of the Schaffhausen Münster is the famous Hosanna Bell, often called the Schiller Bell. Cast in 1486, the huge bell has the Latin inscription ‘Vivos voco, mortuos plango, fulgura frango’, which translates as ‘I call the living, I mourn the dead, I halt the lightning’. It is said that this was the inspiration for Friedrich Schiller’s poem ‘Das Lied von der Glocke’ (Song of the Bell), one of the most famous in German literature and published by Schiller (1759-1805) in 1798. It is also said to have inspired the opening of the ‘Golden Legend’ by Longfellow (1807- 1882).
