Hünenberg with a population of around 8,250 is situated some 8.5 km west of Zug, between the Reuss River and Lake Zug. It was first reliably documented in 1185 as de Hunoberg and the ruins of the 13th century castle of the Knights of Hünenberg were discovered between 1945 and 1951. It is said that Heinrich of Hünenberg sent a warning by arrow from here, which led to the Swiss successfully ambushing the Austrians at the Battle of Morgarten in 1315. The 1475 Catholic Church of St. Wolfgang is a heritage site, with the renovated Rössli restaurant, dating from the Middle Ages, nearby.
