The limestone Höllgrotten Caves are near Baar, which is about 3 km north of Zug, and are well worth a visit. Located on the banks of the River Lorze, the various caves feature miniature lakes, impressive stalagmites and stalactites and all manner of wonderful formations. The main discoveries were the Dome (Dom) in 1863, the Bear’s Cave (Bärenhöhle) in 1892 and the Sorcerers Castle (Zauberschlosse) in 1902. The chambers are connected by good pathways and are well-lit; the visit takes about 45 minutes. There is an idyllic restaurant in the woods or, alternatively, picnic places on the banks of the river.
