No 40 Hirschengraben, at the junction with Künstlergasse, is the Haus zum Rechberg, which is considered one of Zürich’s finest Rococo buildings. Built in the period 1759-1790 and set in terraced gardens, it was occupied in 1799 by French and allied generals and in 1815 by Emperor Francis I of Austria (1768-1835). No 42 the Haus zum Krönli was built in 1739 and restored in the 19th-20th centuries. Nearby is the Hans zum Neuberg (Nos 59/60) which dates originally from 1733 and was rebuilt in 1818; this is where Alfred Escher (1819-1882) the Swiss politician and railway entrepreneur was born.
