The sculptural machines of Jean Tinguely (1925-1991) are known all over the world and his gigantic piece of mechanical sculpture, ‘Heureka’, stands in the Zürichhorn. Originally created for the Swiss National Exhibition in Lausanne in 1964, it was later transferred to Zürichhorn. A Swiss sculptor and painter, Tinguely’s kinetic art in the dada tradition, which is officially known as metamechanics, satirises the mindless overproduction of material goods in our advanced industrial society. His meta-machines are recognised as allegories of a society, whose frenetic activities are, in the ultimate, absurd. Heureka is set in motion twice daily.
