Henry Dunant (1828-1910), the founder of the Red Cross movement, went to Heiden, some 16 km east of St Gallen, in 1897 and spent his last years there. The Henry Dunant Museum is dedicated to his life and work and is housed in the nursing home in which he lived from 1892 until his death. In 1901, he was the first winner of the Nobel Peace Prize (jointly with French economist Frédéric Passy). A highlight of the museum is the room devoted to Dunant’s vision of a world without war and social need, where differences are resolved by negotiation.
