The Heldsberg Fortress, some 23 km northwest of St Gallen, was built in the two years following Germany’s annexation of Austria in March 1938. The 1,000-metre-long tunnel housed four 7.5 cm guns and seven machine guns, with a further 31 in the outer defences; these also had anti-tank weapons, extensive tank and infantry obstacles. The fortress was manned by some 600 men. Apart from the heavy guns, the museum displays infantry weapons, handguns and ammunition, wireless and transmission equipment, gas, radiation protection and measuring equipment and lamps. There is a restaurant serving beverages and light meals and a kiosk
