Zürich’s main railway station, the Hauptbahnhof, handles 2,700 trains daily and has more than 200 shops in the underground ‘Rail City’; it is also the home of the Zürich Tourist Office. Incidentally, only shops located in railway stations are allowed by Swiss law to open on Sundays. Outside, there is Richard Kissling’s 1989 monument to Alfred Escher (1819-1882), builder of the Gotthard railway, a railway pioneer and a member of the Swiss Parliament. Credit Suisse organises an annual film festival showing the latest films on a giant screen and, at Christmas, the Hauptbahnhof stages the Christkindli Markt, one of Europe’s largest festive markets.
