Located approximately 15 km west of Scuol is the village of Guarda, its richly decorated houses made famous by Selina Chönz’s book ‘Schellen-Ursli’, with impressive drawings by Alois Carigiet. The village gets its name from its vantage point with superb views along the valley. It is renowned for the tall stone Engadine houses with sgraffito-decorated facades, (scratched layers of plaster in contrasting colours), which line the narrow streets. In 1975 Guarda received the ‘Wakker Prize’ and was declared a ‘Scene of National Importance’ for outstanding renovation. In summer you can follow the Schellen-Ursli trail; its stations have texts and pictures.
