Poteux is a beautiful natural cave of almost 100 metres in length. It was used as dwelling during the Stone Age (Paleolithic) and is one of oldest inhabited sites known in Valais. It is located approximately 500 metres from the Bayart Tower as the crow flies. The word Poteux comes from the Latin puteus, meaning well or place of water. In 1924, Jules Gross discovered a primitive wall which had partially closed the entry to the cave. Within the cavern he discovered ashes and charcoal in five or six ancient hearths. The caverns of Poteux extend over twelve kilometres in various galleries.
