Greth Schell is a legendary character in Zug who regularly carried her husband home, in a basket round her neck, from his drinking haunts. The Greth Schell Fountain is located close to the Liebfrauen Chapel (see separate entry) and is thought to date from the late 18th/ early 19th centuries and to be the work of Lucerne sculptor Rolf Brem. The Carpenters, Turners and Cooper’s Guild have, since 1887, kept the Greth Schell myth alive in carnival week, when she dances through the old town accompanied by seven jesters (lölis). The statue shows the husband in the basket in a jester’s cap.
