The town of Grenchen (Granges in French), with a population of around 16,500, is located approximately 11 km west of Solothurn. The watch making industry was established here in 1851 and well known manufacturers include Atlantic, Eterna, Breitling and others. The Kuntsthaus (Bahnhofstrasse 53) has over 8,000 works of contemporary art; there is also a Cultural History Museum (Absyte 3) and the Giuseppe Mazzini Memorial Room (Bachtelenstrasse 24), commemorating the Italian freedom fighter Giuseppe Mazzini (1805-1872) and his stay in the area. Grenchen was awarded the 2008 Wakker Heritage prize for improvement of its public spaces and preservation of post-war buildings.
