One of Zürich’s best known statues is located at Bürkliplatz (see separate entry) and is of Ganymede, the handsome youth who, in Greek mythology, was captured by an eagle sent by Zeus to bring him to Mount Olympus. The statue is the work of Swiss sculptor Hermann Hubacher (1885-1976) and dates from 1952; it is positioned in such a way that the background peaks could well be the home of the Gods. The treatment of the myth is unusual, in that it does not depict the kidnapping, but Ganymede pleading with the eagle (Zeus) to take him aloft.
